Every day we face hundreds of choices in our lives. From the most mundane “What should I have for dinner?” to the potentially life changing decisions that we make only once in a great while, life is about making choices, whether we want to make them or not. Even choosing…

Baby Steps

A great block to nourishment of the soul is distrust. We don’t trust ourselves, so we stay rooted in the easy and convenient. We eliminate as much pain as we can from our lives and end up painted into a corner we call safety. Safety is the most unsafe spiritual…

Shake it Out: Florence and the Machine.

The sounds of healing are not always gentle. Sometimes, in fact, the sights and sounds of our healing are messy and heart-rending—a scream in the night; a gut wrenching sob, pain so deep  it will not let you come up for air.

The Healing Power of Joy

Photo from A Walk Through Durham County by Kathleen Connally

And Joy is Everywhere;
It is in the Earth’s green covering of grass;
In the blue serenity of the Sky;
In the reckless exuberance of Spring;
In the severe abstinence of gray Winter;
In the Living flesh that animates our bodily frame;
In the perfect poise of the Human figure, noble and upright;
In Living;
In the exercise of all our powers;
In the acquisition of Knowledge;
In fighting evils…
Joy is there Everywhere”

Rabindranath Tagore

Joy, unlike happiness, is a universal concept. Joy exists in the things that all people–regardless of culture, nationality or religion– hold apart as pure: children, family, art, nature, beauty, freedom, music and a sense of wonder are some of them. There are literally hundreds more.

Joy is the highest of all emotions. It sustains us through suffering and provides us with the hope we need to keep trying when life seems too difficult to bear. It is also almost absurdly bountiful. All one needs to do to find it is to step outside.

You cannot heal without joy in your life. Don’t sit idly by waiting for it to find you; reach out and take some.

It’s everywhere, and it’s free.
